Puzzle games have been around for as long as anyone can remember. They were among the very first games that made their way on to home consoles such as Atari or the NES. The most memorable thing about these games was the fact that they didn’t really have an ending per say, instead players just competed with each other to get the highest score possible without dying. These games saw so much popularity that even after the passage of decades we still find ourselves attracted to them or their clones for no apparent reason. A prime example of such a cloned retro game is Colorate.
Review: Colorate – A Retro Puzzle Game
Colorate is a puzzle game that somewhat emulates Bubble Blaster and has players shoot different colored blocks at the ceiling. The object of the game is to survive as long as possible by stacking three same colored blocks and making them disappear. Of course, it goes without saying that as time progresses, the ceiling makes the blocks move towards the bottom and once any block from the top touches the end of the screen, its game over.
The gameplay may seem simple enough to many users but truth be told it’s a lot harder than it sounds because the game gets increasingly difficult as it progresses. My only complaint is the lack of a timed mode in which players compete to get high scores in a limited time instead of playing the game infinitely. However, to be fairly honest the app is still in its beta stages, so who knows maybe the developer will add more mods as time progresses.
The graphics of the game are pretty retro and kind of reminds one of the good old days when things like polygon count didn’t really matter as long as the gameplay of the game was challenging enough.
All in all, Colorate is an amazing retro style game that will remind you of classics such as Bubble Bobble, Bubble Blaster etc. and just transport you back to the times when getting a high score was the only thing that mattered.
