Plants vs. Zombies was an immensely fun and overall amazingly addictive game when it first came out. While it wasn’t the first of a kind in its genre, it sure had a different concept mixed with the right amount of comic relief to make the game a hit. It’s no wonder that its sequel, Plants vs. Zombies 2 almost saw the same success as it manages to expand on the experience of its predecessor.
Review: Plants vs. Zombies 2 – In app Payments For the Win!
As expected, Plants vs. Zombies 2 has a new storyline. This time around the game has you join Crazy Dave in his quest to eat a taco in which you somehow end up travelling through time to various scenarios such as Ancient Egypt etc. where you must set up camp and defeat waves of zombies. Of course, since this is after all a sequel, so we do have many new plants players can work with as well as having some new modes to spice up the game.
Not only does the game offer new zombies such as the Yeti Zombie, it also offers great boss battles this time around as well. With new plants which allow players to devise more strategies than before, you can replay a level over and over again with different strategies. Apart from the new plants, you also have access to your favorite old plants from the original game as they are still there as well (though plants such as fiery jalapenos or squashes will be available only after making your wallet lighter).
The graphics of the sprites are still the same. However, this time around we do have better backgrounds to work with. Apart from that, the soundtrack of the game is still addictive and fun as ever, making the whole process of killing zombies feel great.
While the original game didn’t really have a lot to offer in terms of in app purchases, this time around PopCap decided that it was high time to change that. Not only can you purchase different power ups for your plants by spending real life money, but you can also use the in app purchases to buy keys which can be used to unlock certain levels in the game that add more deadly plants to your arsenal. Of course, you can achieve all that by vigorously grinding through the game and playing some levels more than others but let’s face it, that’s just not right.
All in all, Plants vs. Zombies 2 is a great (though not worthy) sequel to the original game and even though it kind of pushes in app purchases to the player, I still couldn’t help but enjoy the game for a bit. Sure the difficulty just went insane after a few levels and made me close the game as I wasn’t about to spend money on in app purchases but I just can’t bring myself to say that it’s a bad game. The developers just need to rework a few things to make the game as brilliant and fun as the original.
Good Things
- Amazing Gameplay
- Same Graphics
- Great Soundtrack
Bad Things
- Lots of in app Purchases
- Difficult to Progress without IAP
